Frequently Asked Questions
How long do the batteries last?
Ultralife brand lithium batteries typically last over 3 years in a production situation. (or a total of 50 hours of continuous alarming with a single battery) An optional dual battery strap will double this. If standing by, they can last up to the rated life of the battery which is 10 years.
Is the Drum Alarm water tight?
The gasketed enclosure has a NEMA rating of 4X which provices protection against corrosion and hose-directed water. From NEMA specifications:
- "Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt, rain, sleet, snow, windblown dust, splashing water, and hose-directed water; and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure."
Is the Drum Alarm intrinsically safe?
No.
Is the Drum Alarm explosion proof?
Why isn't there an on/off switch?
An off switch is an opportunity to forget to turn the switch back on, and as a result, have containers run empty. In practice, the Drum Alarm will sense a low level and then chemical operators will prop the drum on an angle which pools the last bit of liquid around the float switch. This is a good opportunity to fetch a new drum. Nevertheless if desired there is a touch-to-silence audio alarm available.
How long will the Drum Alarm last?
Even under rough and corrosive conditions, the first units built 9 years ago are still functioning. Since the LED and audioalarm, and float switch have very long lifetimes, the most probable failure mode is cracking of the PVC electronics enclosure.
